​MEDICAL ASSISTING DISTANCE LEARNING

Certified Medical Assistants work in physicians’ offices, clinics, or other healthcare facilities. They are responsible for performing physician support services that help ensure medical facilities run smoothly.

Medical Assistant’s duties may include verifying patient information, recording medical history, and confirming purpose of visit. They prepare patients for examination by performing preliminary physical tests, taking blood pressure, weight, and temperature and reporting patient history. Certified Medical Assistants may work in clerical, administrative, or clinical capacity.

WHAT IS THE PROGRAM ABOUT?

Putnam Career & Technical Center (PCTC) is pleased to provide allied health education to Putnam and surrounding counties in order to meet the need for the growing number of certified medical assistants. The program consists of 8 months of classroom and clinical instruction.

WHAT ARE THE COURSE OBJECTIVES?

  • Assess basic physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural needs of the client

WHAT ARE THE ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS?

  • High school diploma or GED/TASC

  • Good physical and mental health

  • Be 18 years of age by the first day of class

  • Applicants must have completed the first of the series of three Hepatitis B immunizations prior to starting the program.

WHAT IS THE ELIGIBILITY FOR LICENSURE AFTER COMPLETING

Students completing the Medical Assisting program may apply to test for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant. Completion of an application and submission of fees are required for licensure exam registration.

PROGRAM PREREQUISITES

Student must complete at least the first of a series of three Hepatitis B immunizations.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • Students must maintain a passing grade in each course to continue in the program.

  • Students are required to wear scrub uniforms, clinic shoes, jackets and a watch with a second hand.

PROGRAM LENGTH

  • 675 clock hours (Adult full-time enrollment)

  • Consisting of five (5) courses

*A multi-week externship will occur during the final course of the program. Schedule hours will vary based on the clinical facility work schedule.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION

Students completing the Medical Assisting program are eligible to apply to test for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) by registering with the National Healthcareer Association. Application and submission of fees are required for certification exam registration.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

9101A MEDICAL ASSISTING I

The skill sets in this course are representative of the basic knowledge included in a Career and Technical Education/Health Science Program of Study. Incorporated into this course are elements of introductory knowledge and skills necessary for any health occupations career. Students utilize problem-solving techniques and participate in hands-on activities to develop an understanding of course concepts. Teachers should provide each student with real world learning opportunities and instruction. Students are encouraged to become active members of the student organization, HOSA. All West Virginia teachers are responsible for classroom instruction that integrates learning skills, technology tools, and content skill sets.

9102A MEDICAL ASSISTING II

The skill sets in this course are representative of the basic knowledge needed for a career in the medical assisting industry. This course educates students on the concepts of regulatory guidelines, patient communication techniques, legal responsibilities, medical ethics, risk management, quality assurance, and safety. Students will participate in classroom theory and apply basic knowledge through hands-on experiences.

9103A MEDICAL ASSISTING III

This course is designed to introduce the student to general and administrative duties found in a medical office. This course follows CAAHEP/AAMA accreditation standards and includes appointment scheduling, records management, written communications, preparation of medical records, billing, health insurance, professional reports, telephone procedures and telephone competency. The course includes office simulations in all these areas as well as lecture, discussion and lab sessions using interpersonal skills. Students utilize problem-solving techniques and participate in hands-on activities to develop an understanding of course concepts. Teachers should provide each student with real world learning opportunities and instruction. Students are encouraged to become active members of the student organization, HOSA. All West Virginia teachers are responsible for classroom instruction that integrates learning skills, technology tools and content skill sets.

9104A MEDICAL ASSISTING IV

Instructional content in this will focus on clinical procedures utilized within medical offices. Major components include emergency medical care, physical exam, basic pharmacology and administration of medication. Students will focus upon employability strategies and career development necessary for successful employment. Students will participate in a work‐based clinical externship within a medical office or equivalent health care facility. Due to health care industry standards, exemplary attendance is mandatory. All content skill sets must be mastered before students are eligible to attain established credentials and/or industry validation. Students utilize problem‐solving techniques and participate in hands‐on activities to develop an understanding of course concepts. Teachers should provide each student with real world learning opportunities and instruction. Students are encouraged to become active members of the student organization, HOSA-Future Health Professionals. 9105A MEDICAL ASSISTING V

This course describes the scope of pharmacology as it relates to the medical assisting profession. Instruction introduces the student to drug therapy and pathophysiologic conditions, patient education regarding medications and researching drugs in a drug reference. Course content includes the use, action, side effects, contraindication and routes of administration most commonly administered in the medical office. This course follows the CAAHEP/AAMA accreditation standards in place for medical assistants. With participation and input of therapeutic services professionals, instructional content will incorporate project and problem‐based therapeutic practices and procedures to demonstrate the criticality of these skills. Students utilize problem‐solving techniques and participate in hands‐on activities to develop an understanding of course concepts. Teachers should provide each student with real world learning opportunities and instruction. Students are encouraged to become active members of the student organization, HOSA-Future Health Professionals.
